objectives

The overall objective of the ITM is to promote the quality of the teaching, research and service functions of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Stellenbosch.

This objective is achieved by:

	Executing research, development and professional service projects.
	Coordinating and managing research, development and professional service projects.
	Procuring and operating engineering tools, processes and equipment, and making them available for the teaching and research activities of the Department and specific clients.
	Improving, expanding and adapting the facilities of the Department.
	Contributing to funding postgraduate studies.
	Exposing students to engineering practice, e.g. in research projects, thereby stimulating their interest in postgraduate studies.
	Motivating and stimulating the teaching staff by involving them in research, development and professional service projects.
	Encouraging and strengthening contact with industries and related organisations.
	Encouraging contact with other departments within the University of Stellenbosch by involving them in the Institute's activities
